Anti-right-wing protest

This series shows the rise of the citizens of Braunschweig, a city in Germany, against right-wing “Alternative für Deutschland” (AfD) party which held their national party convention in the town on 30 Nov. 2019. Although police officials feared that protests could turn into violent riots by anti-fascist groups coming to the city from all over Germany, the demonstrations stayed calm, peaceful, colorful. More than 20,000 people – representatives from political parties, unions, and many families with their children – marched from the convention’s venue “Volkswagenhalle” to the downtown yard in front of “Schloss-Arkaden” (palace arcades) to listen to offical speeches and music bands. A highlight was the speech of Holocaust survivor Sally Perel, after whom a Braunschweig school was recently named. Surrounded by school children, he described the political situation in Germany after the Nazis seized power in Germany and sounded a note of caution to an audience who had become quiet and deeply impressed by his words. The event closed with a concert of Braunschweig-born songwriter and musician Bosse, a famous German artist in the meantime, who had come to his hometown to show his support.
